Bird Calls

OK, to the important things first. I'm thinking there must be some good songs out there that would be relevant to our variety of bird poems this semester. We've already heard Neil Young's "Birds" ("When you see me fly away without you / Shadow on the things you know / Feathers fall around you / And show you the way to go"), and I've also tried to connect Cohen's/Buckley's "Hallelujah" to "Ode to a Nightingale," but do any of you have any other relevant songs to recommend? Annie (10:00) recommended the Hoagy Carmichael/Johnny Mercer jazz standard "Skylark." I know Shearwater has a song called "Sing Little Birdie," but I haven't seen the lyrics. Goldfrapp's "Little Bird"? Maybe someone would want to invoke that 70s southern rock chestnut (gulp), "Freebird"!

  1. How about "Blackbird" by The Beatles?

"Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise."

  2. Word. Just play the score from Hitchcock's, "The Birds," as conducted by Oskar Sala.

  3. Having music for the time period, paintings, etc. of the works we are learning about makes the class interesting. It helps to invite us in as readers.

  7. I'm not sure if this is still relevant, but my favorite bird song is probably, "Maybe Sparrow" by Neko Case. (I don't know about you, but I am madly in love with her.)

  8. I love Neko Case, too ... and I'm so excited her new cd is coming out on Tuesday (along with the new U2, so it'll be quite a happy day!). "Maybe Sparrow" is a great song; too bad it's not "Maybe Swallow," because then it would be irresistible for "To Autumn"!

  10. Yay for fellow Neko Case lovers! This is my first blog comment and I feel silly. I'm not so good at the computer thing, but I will try it out. Also, I love having that bit of music in the morning. My vote is that all teachers should probably go with that technique.
